I was harmlessly scrolling through X (Formerly known as Twitter) yesterday and i bumped into a thread where some big companies layed off hundreds of staffs, only for them to be replaced with AI robots. Sad story.
Ever since AI was introduced to the world, we have constantly heard one encouraging line, “Don’t worry, AI will not take away your jobs or replace humans”. Hmm, I’m very sorry to let you know that this is a big lie from the deepest part of hell.
I’m not the only one seeing it, even this article from Forbes highlighted some companies who has repeatedly replaced human workforce with AI and it’s getting really really serious.
Before i even continue, let me share with you the thread i saw about Human workforce being replaced with AI;
1. Amazon replaces 100,000 workers with 750,000 AI robots
2. Robot taking over household cleaning work
3. AI machine cleaning Restroom
4. A robot working as an attendant at a gas station in China
5. A robot that helps in drawing road signs
Now tell me, after all these you’ve seen from the clips above, are you still certain that AI won’t take your job away?
To be honest, we all thought AI was the help humans needed all along to attain new heights in technology and other related fields but now it’s all started to get blurry.
How can we avoid AI taking over?
This is the question every worker is secretly asking themselves privately, and my personal answer is All hope is not lost, maybe we just need to better prepare by aligning ourselves in multiple fields or area where the AI impact does not affect us as much.
in 2023, IBM fired 8000 staffs and replaced them with AI only to hire just as much number of staffs later
Why did they do that you’ll wonder, Well Arvind Krishna, IBM’s CEO since 2020 explained this surprising outcome during an interview with The Wall Street Journal:
“Our total employment has actually gone up, because what [AI] does is it gives you more investment to put into other areas.”
These areas include software engineering, marketing, and sales — jobs that require creativity, critical thinking, and direct human interaction.
This simply means that IBM redirected the resources freed by AI automation to hire experts in high-value fields. The new hires focused on programming, marketing, and client-facing roles, sectors that remain less vulnerable to automation.
This showed that the company simply changed its strategy to combine technology and human expertise to strengthen its business, rather than just cutting costs.
Which shows the need for workers to adapt or venture into fields that is not easily integrated with AI and to also start getting conversant with Artificial intelligence so it doesn’t catch them off guard when the time comes rather it would then become an easy transition.
What do you think, is AI Coming for all of us? 🤔
