WhatsApp has officially expanded its voice chat functionality, allowing users to start real-time audio conversations in group chats of all sizes. This feature, previously available only for larger groups, is now accessible to everyone, making group communication smoother, more spontaneous, and less disruptive.
What’s New?
Unlike traditional group calls that ring everyone and demand immediate attention, the new Voice Chats feature works silently. When a user starts a voice chat in a group, members receive a gentle push notification instead of a ringing alert. Others can join or leave at their convenience making it ideal for casual or ongoing conversations.
This upgrade gives WhatsApp a competitive edge, borrowing inspiration from Telegram’s similar group voice chat functionality.
How it Works
- Voice chats can be started with a tap on the voice chat icon in any group.
- Once initiated, members can see the active voice chat at the top of the chat screen.
- Participants can speak freely, leave quietly, and rejoin as needed.
- If no one joins within 60 minutes, the voice chat ends automatically.
Designed for Flexibility and Privacy
WhatsApp designed this feature to be flexible and non-intrusive:
- No call history is logged.
- Members are not forced into the chat.
- Voice chats are protected by end-to-end encryption, just like standard WhatsApp messages and calls.
Why It Matters
This update brings a new level of convenience to WhatsApp group interactions. Whether you’re coordinating with family, brainstorming with a project team, or catching up with friends, you now have a more relaxed, seamless way to talk without the pressure of a formal call.
Rollout and Availability
The voice chat feature is available now and will roll out to all WhatsApp users globally. If you don’t see the option yet, make sure your app is updated to the latest version via the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
