WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a much-anticipated feature that will allow users to set usernames, a move that significantly improves privacy and user control.
Currently in beta testing, the feature will let users connect and chat without revealing their phone numbers—marking a shift from the phone-number-based system that has been a core part of WhatsApp since its launch.
What the Username Feature Offers
- Custom Usernames: Users can choose a unique identifier between 3 to 30 characters long. Allowed characters include lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores.
- Enhanced Privacy: This update makes it easier to message someone—especially in groups or business chats—without needing to share your phone number.
- Real-Time Updates: Just like when someone changes their profile photo or phone number, contacts will be notified when a username is updated.
- Username Availability Check: WhatsApp will let users check if a username is available, particularly through WhatsApp Web.
- Guidelines and Restrictions:
- Usernames can’t begin with “www.”
- No domain extensions like “.com” or “.net” allowed.
- Usernames already in your contacts or taken by others won’t be available.
- Consecutive periods are also not allowed.
When Will It Be Available?
The username feature is being tested in the iOS beta version 25.17.10.70. A full public rollout is expected in the coming months once testing is complete.
